BestBuy employee comments on DIY screens

So a buddy of mine wants a theater room in his basement for movies and gaming. I show him the screen I made, we pop in Cars and he loves it. He was still thinking about just using a rear projection TV. So we jump in the car and go around the corner to Best Buy. We are looking at a few rear projections when along comes supersalesman. He procedes to tell us that front projection is junk and has a ****** picture on any screen larger than 70" and they only work well with a $5K screen ...... My buddy pipes up and tells the salesman that I have a homemade 110" laminate screen with a Sony projector just like the one they have on sale. He says "A screen made of Formica? That must look like...". Needless to say the salesman did not sell anything to us. :coocoo:

Welcome to the Big Box store sales person. They hire anybody and they dont have a clue what they are talking about in most cases. I bet you if you dragged him down to your place and actually showed him your setup he would change his tune.
I never trust anything they have on display as in most cases it will look and sound totally different once in your home. Remember these are the same people who tell us that Monster cables are the best cables to buy:dumbcrazy:

I think the answer lie within the 3rd 4th and 5th words of your subject heading :duck:

Seriously, DIY screens and a lot of other DIY projects rival and beat commercial offerings at many times the price. It can be really hard for some people to wrap their head around it though. Just point your friend to this forum and other places on the internet where he can find real data and opinions based on experience.

Most of the salesman at those type of stores are hired off the street and givin a quickie sales course and then put out on the floor to do what, that's right, sell their products. They will tell you anything if it will make you buy from them. It is mostly just alot of hype to seperate you from your money. Most informed people know that but I really feel sorry for all the people who get snookered by this type of salesman.

I wouldn't allow one in my house.

I agree 1000%!

If Best Buy started selling screen paint that was nothing more than white paint, you betcha they then would say that was pretty terrific stuff (for probably at least $100 a quart!). Those stores don't want to hear anything 'DIY' or about places like MonoPrice or RiteAV. They will tell you Monster cable is the way to go and laugh when you say lamp cord works just as good.

What I like to do is play a big dumb at first. Actually I really don't play dumb, I just don't say much- I just ask some generic questions. If the guy is shooting straight with you, it's usually easy to tell, but when you get the ones that are a bit smug or start saying things that aren't true... well that's when the quiet guy routine usually ends and when I start asking tough questions... or say something like 'Really? I thought Contrast Ratio meant this...' or 'Why is it I can buy a 50' HDMI cable for the same price you are selling a 6' cable?' When they say something like 'Well ours are better... I go all digital on them and start talking about the difference between digital and analog and signal degradation... Usually they say they have another customer to help... or on the really good days I get asked to leave the store!

I've only been asked to leave a couple of stores only a few times, like when I rather loudly asked a rude salesman why the exact same set they were selling was $300 cheaper at Sam's Club... or as I mentioned I start praising MonoPrice and RiteAV and customers start asking for the website and then start asking me questions!

Not all the guys working the big box stores are bad, but yeah, some of them wouldn't know an HT projector from an overhead projector if one fell on their head!

My favorite one was when a BB employee told me that Bluray was better than HD DVD because 1 BD has 50GB discs, and 2 he said HD DVD was nothing more than upconverted DVD and was even in the same format as SDVD. Or that Bluray is 1080p and HD DVD isn't... things like that always get me going. ;)

If you really want to see their heads spin, when you're in the projector room start asking questions about gain vs viewing cone... fL ratings, the difference between video optimized Lumens and max lumens... and then throw in the killer... ask them what temperature the screen is and what the neutral rating is! ;)

Sometimes I can amuse myself quite well at BB or CC! I have long hair and look like I walked off the set of Braveheart so they tend to think I'm not too bright! ;)

I can picture Bill now strolling down the aisles in a kilt bare chested! Talk about intimidation!

Ok sorry for straying off topic!
Re: Maybe OT, BestBuy employee comments on DIY screens

lol yeah I was dressed but had my claymore with me!

The only reason I really stop in those stores is when I am out shopping with my wife and I'm bored. Movie prices are usually full MSRP which is nuts and they never have anything I am looking for as far as hardware- cables, forget it... I never buy cables from them.
Re: Maybe OT, BestBuy employee comments on DIY screens

Claymore! LOL. Great one. I was thinking mine instead of sword when I first read it, not having noted the kilt comment above.

It is hard not to set mines for the poor guys at these stores. Sometimes I go in just to check out some product that we don't sell that I think I might be interested in, and ask a few questions. When they come back with "I don't knows" I just let it be. When they come back with nonsense or outright misinformation I just can't help myself. Ask a few more questions to let them did the hole deeper, then bam!, the mine goes off and I give them a short education in electronics or just get a good laugh if I am in a less charitable mood. It is particularly viscious if other customers are present, but I have a hard time letting them mislead people.

Mines would work too! I was thinking of one of my scotish claymore swords ;)

I'm with you, if they don't know and are honest that's one thing, but when they start dishing out bad info, and worse... when they smuggly dish out bad info... well ya have to say something right?! You do exactly what I do. I give a lot of head nods, generic questions, and let them dig themselves in deeper and then I go for the kill.

I really have been asked to leave a couple of stores because like you, I have a hard time when a sales person knowingly is misleading someone and I tend to speak up. They don't like that very much... the store not the customer that ended up saving money... and that's usually when I get asked to leave.
Re: Maybe OT, BestBuy employee comments on DIY screens

Use the force. Just wave your hand in front of the poor customer being sold a $130 HDMI cable and say "you don't need to buy that cable," as Obiwan Kenobi would do, and see if it works. I bet it does. Nothing more in line with the force than the truth...but when Jaba the BB guy tell you that your Jedi mind tricks don't work on him (a certain intelligence is likely required), it is time to go.

Actually, they receive zero sales/product training. At least this is how it is at fry's.
