Building Custom Subwoofers!!!!

14461 Views 61 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  derekpittx
i am thinking of building a custom subwoofer using a mmats pro audio 12" subwoofer. It is called the procast or p3.0...

It is dual 4 ohm voice coil. I am trying to sell them but not having any luck so i was thinking of building boxes for them.

i Don't know what i should use for amplifiers... Any suggestions would be great. 500watts and up can be handled by these beasts.. here are the specs.. If i sell these i'm looking at a sunfire sub or a klipsch rw-12d

P3.0 12

Voice Coil (Ohms) 2 x 4
Fs (Hz.) 26
Vas (Liters) 84.0
Qts . .18
SPL (1W/1M) 92db
Power (Wrms) 750

Personally I'd go with the slot port, it will have a lower air speed.
Thanks. Ill get on those tomorrow.

Updates on completed boxes will be up later tonight. Debating wether to paint or have them laminated

Ep4000 and the elemental designs eq.2

After much thought. I have decided to wrap the boxes in black naugahide. Just don't want to spend the money and time with paint.

Finally got all my equipment. Hopefull be hooked up this upcoming weekend... sub boxes should be finally finishd. Been waiting on the shop to order my material....have finished pictures soon

They're taking shape. Did you get an amp yet?
Mike. I hooked up the amp and eq.2. The amp is not getting a signal. Here is what I have. Single rca to a y adapter going to eq.2 then rca to 1/4 to amp. Not sure if im missing anything

Take the eQ.2 out of the chain and see if you get anything.
I did that. Still nothing. Amp powers up. Clip lights flick then only power light is on

Do you think the signal from the reciever is week.
Just an idea, but is the sub out enabled in your avr? I had to turn mine on because the default was set to off when i got it.
If you have and iPod wire try to put a signal through the amp with that to just see if you get sound.
Single rca to a y adapter going to eq.2 then rca to 1/4 to amp.
Can you take a picture off how you have it connected.

I have two subs running in stereo from my EP4000 amp and wire mine like this.

Single rca from the sub output of the receiver (I use a subwoofer cable as I had two spare) going into input 1 off the EQ.2.

The a rca from output 1 off the EQ.2 into a 1/4 rca jack adapter into input 1 off the EP4000.

I run my EP4000 in parallel so that I am duplicating input 1 to input 2 so this way I only need to use one input off the EP4000. The gains on the front are still independant off each other so you can still adjust the levels according if you need to. It just means that the signal on both outputs is exactly the same.

My switches on the back off the EP4000 are as follows:

1 - Right
2 - Right
3 - Right
4 - Right
5 - Right
6 - Left
7 - Left
8 - Right
9 - Right
10 - Right

I used to have my gain on the EP4000 on max but now have it on 24db and the onkyo sub trim level on +7 so the input signal going in is stronger.

What receiver are you using?

It may well be that you will need to purchase a samson s converter to boost the signal but most receivers should have a strong enough input signal.

Let me know how you get on.

cheers

Graham, using a single rca to eq.2 with a y adapter. Then rca to 1/4" plug from eq2.ill put a pic up in a bit

Using a tx sr805 from onkyo
Cool, you shouldn't have any voltage input issues with the onkyo 805 receiver.

Where do I find the sub trim level on the reciever
See pic attached. On the bottom off the remote you can hit CH Sel button until you see subwoofer come up on the on screen display on the onkyo. The use the plus and minus to increase and decrease the level.

The better way is to go into the setup menu, then speaker set up and level calibration and adjust it from there.

This way it records it in so when you turn the receiver off and on again it doesn't change back to what you had previously which is what happens when you just select the CH Sel button on the remote.

You can use the CH Sel button just to get the levels correct.
