Well money is tight, under $300 if possible. All I need it for is a 15x25 room that's used for xbox 360, and movies from my htpc to my projector.

I'm not picky but all I see is the pioneer vsx-1022 for $250 (Amazon). I'll buy a refurbished one if there's a better buy out there.

Onkyo, TX-NR414 is about $250 and as good of a value as you are going to get. The TX-NR515 is $295, has the same power as the 414 but with a few more bells and whistles. If you are willing to spend the extra $$ for the 515, the Marvell Qdeo Video processor and 3D capabilities alone, makes it worth while.

MAJOR EDIT:
I found the $700 TX-NR616 on sale for $269, drop what you are doing and BUY THIS NOW!

I messed up and meant to post a link.

Also, I have done a side by side of low end Pioneer (VSX) and Onkyo in my home. It was clear to myself and everyone I demo'd it to; including the guy who bought the Pioneer (for his mom), that the Onkyo did sound much better. The Pioneer (on the low end) sounded harsh, overly warm with a lack of detail, very gritty, and you could hear stepping in the volume control.

No, the 609 is superior. Its amplification section is really good.
