Does my Yamaha receiver [model 2080] decode so I do not need to specify 5.1 on DVDs menus?

I suspect the answer is yes, but then I 'm wondering why have this question on all DVDs

Unless the disk is programmed to send a surround track by default, it will default to sending stereo and you'll have to choose the surround track.

Doesn't matter whether the receiver can decode true 5.1 (the 2080 can) if the track the disk sends is only stereo.

Image: JVC DLA-RS1000 (a/k/a NX5) true 4K projector w/ frame-by-frame HDR10 tone-mapping. RF sync'd 3D glasses. Images up to 6' by 11' 4" (148" diagonal at 2.35:1) on a 0.55 gain screenwall painted with Cream&Sugar Ultra. Calibrated by JVC Autocal.
Sound: 7.2.4 array of Paradigm, Boston Acoustics, and Onkyo speakers, driven by a Yamaha RX-A3070 AVR (with a Denon 2307CI AVR driving the 4 overhead speakers). Channels are tonally and temporally matched by the 3070's YPAO - but volume matched by ear.
