Ive always liked the sound I get from a Shure SM57 but they are a little big if your looking for something that not so visible. This AKG "groove pack" is also a great set.

The new Beta 98 is the industry leading Tom mic. It's a small diaphragm condenser and sounds fantastic. I have used 57s, Sennheiser 600 and 900 series, Audix D2s and D4s and the 98s sound better than them all. I'm an audio engineer as well so I spend a lot of time dialing in my toms. But the 98s are the closest out of the box Tom mics you can find in my opinion that don't take too much work to get sounding great. Get the new ones that have a direct xlr connection; the older mini connectors suck.
