HD Formula Projection / Projector Screen Paint

I’m not a marking guy / I’m not going to create a fancy page to sell this stuff like some others have here on ebay - I'm just an honest guy with an honest product. I have been a production tech for 32 years and after sampling pretty much all of the screen solutions available on ebay and finding most of it is just plain old paint and not designed to be projection screen, I've decided to buy bulk quantities of screen solution and the texture mix so I can offer up a quality product, this is good stuff, you will be happy with the picture it produces, or you get your money back, even if it’s a year later. If you mess up the application (hey, it happens...) I will discount another can until we get the correct results. I want a five star experience every time here.

I was a huge fan of "screen goo" for 15 years, and then I got far enough into the business to realize how it’s made... Yes it’s fantastic but the mark-up on it is obnoxious. This solution I am selling will produce the results or your money back, no questions asked.

This auction is for 1 quart of projector screen solution (paint) that is Formulated to create a high contrast, color neutral screen of at least 140'' (I under promise and over deliver on the amount, these cans can do ALOT more than 140") and it will provide optimized vivid colors AND true blacks. If you need more than one can I will take 7 bucks off additional cans

This solution is designed for medium to low ambient light situations and It can be applied to any flat surface, If you are in the higher ambient light (churches, lecture halls, etc) I also offer a product that is better suited, just send me an email. I check my email twice a day at roughly 6am and 6pm.

General tips:

I recommend a foam roller (as opposed to a standard fiber roller) to achieve the correct texture. Aside from incorrect texture, cheap rollers can leave fibers behind that glow under projection. **Always mix this product well at time of application** there are components that separate quickly. Give it a quick mix every ten minutes or so while applying.

A base coat is recommended for unfinished or colored surfaces:

For higher ambient light locations near windows or unavoidable interior lights, use a matte white base coat. For medium to low ambient light situations, use an eggshell, light/medium grey base coat for the best contrast and gain.

Faint overlap lines are normal and this product will smooth out these lines as it cures.

Dry time is 2 - 4 hours, product will continue to cure and improve texture and contrast for up to 3 months depending on local humidity and my warranty on the product is forever, you’re happy or you get your money back even if it’s a year later.

I have completed many screens large and small from the Smokey bar environment to the living room, to the outdoor hot tub, to the concert hall, if you would like to pick my brain or share ideas I welcome questions and special requests, I can get outdoor compound for HUGE screen projects from the same company and welcome special orders but need about 10 days lead time for large orders.
At least they're not a 'marking guy'. :rolleyesno: And it boasts of 2.8 gain. :nono: Ordered for testing. Next up:

High Contrast HD Video Projector Screen Paint

Hi-Contrast HD Color Enhancing Video Projector Screen Paint

*Custom mixed for video projectors resulting in better contrast , no hotspotting , richer colors, & deeper blacks.

*Can be easily applied directly to wall or blackout cloth with foam roller (not included).

* Premium Acrylic Latex Paint enhanced with Luminescent Titanium dioxide

* 1.8 screen gain for superior viewing quality

*1 quart. Covers 62-100 sq. ft.(more than enough for a standard 4x8 screen)

Before you spend hundreds of dollars on a projector screen, try this specially formulated Titanium Dioxide enhanced paint. It is the perfect choice for Home Theaters and Powerpoint presentations, bringing out richer and more vibrant colors. Simply sand wall smooth and roll on with a foam roller (not included). Can also be applied to blackout cloth. It works especially well with HD projectors, both LCD and DLP. Also works well with projectors in rooms with ambient lighting and helps to eliminate light washout. Home-Tech has been in the A/V business for over 10 years. Beware of EBAY scammers selling ordinary hardware store paint with black duct tape for the border.

Picture of the wall. Left half is the original flat white primer. Right half is painted with one coat of the Hi-Contrast HD paint. The tan dot in the upper right hand corner is the putty used to patch the holes in the wall. Click on the blue links for pictures.

Step By Step Do-It-Yourself Hi-Contrast HD Video Screen

STEP 1:
Project image on wall to proper size, making sure image is level.
step1

STEP 2:
After patching and sanding any rough spots, mask wall approx.
3/4" outside of image. Masking does not need to be perfect as
the border will cover it.
step2

STEP 3:
Prime wall (if needed) with any latex sealer/primer. Then roll on
Hi-Contrast paint with foam roller(only included in kit).
step3

STEP 4:
Once paint has dried, a black border can be installed around the
screen. For a professional look, I like to trim the screen with flat
black painted casing.
step4

Finished Screen:

Note: Velvet border strips can be used as a substitute for the border.
(See my other auctions for self adhesive felt border)
Although trimming the frame looks good, black velvet will
drown out more light for a better border. Also, the darker
the screen wall is, the better the picture will look.
I didn't include the links for this product. But I did order some. How could I pass on a 'Color Enhancing' paint "enhanced with Luminescent Titanium dioxide"?!?! Especially when they have a gain of 1.8.

That was pretty much it. The only other screen paint I saw there was Goo and I have already reviewed Screen Goo here. It is not worth the money. :rolleyesno:

To be honest, all of these paints could perform fine as a painted screen. The question is, can they perform to the outrageous standards that they claim to? We'll find out.

I love the "enhanced with titanium dioxide" line.
I think I prefer the "enhanced with Luminescent Titanium dioxide". It sounds like MississippiMan, pbmaxx and the rest of the avs crew were the technical writers for these particular paints. I wonder what makes a paint HD? Or how they achieved gains of 2.0 and up?

It kind of reminds me of the good old Black Flame Light Fusion days. :rolleyesno:

I have received the "Video Screen Solution - DSGS-3DHD-1Q - Digisilver 3D Grey Screen" paint boasting a "2.8 Gain for Med.Ambient Light". It was shipped from Minneapolis, MN. I thought it would come from Byhalia, MS. It came with nothing more than the can of paint.

And also the "HiContrast HD Video Screen Paint" which is "formulated for video projectors resulting in:
  • Higher color contrast
  • 1.8 screen gain
  • Richer colors
  • Deeper blacks
". It also states on the label "Use for DLP & LCD Video Projectors. Can be easily applied directly to wall or blackout cloth." This also came with a sheet that has application directions, drying time, curing time, cleanup, coverage, etc on it as well as the lovely quote "Premium Acrylic Latex Paint enhanced with Luminescent Titanium Dioxide". :rofl2:

Luminescence

lu·mi·nes·cence   [loo-muh-nes-uhns]
1.the emission of light not caused by incandescence and occurring at a temperature below that of incandescent bodies.

2.the light produced by such an emission.
Does that mean it will glow in the dark?

I'll be out of town next week so expect more in a couple weeks. :T

Got my microscope working on my Mac. Here are some microscope shots of the Pro Screen powder. It's supposed to be glass spheres and an anti-foaming agent. I cannot find any glass spheres in these shots... unless they are smaller than what can be seen with my scope. And this scope can clearly see the glass spheres on a Hi-Power screen.

I should have all these panels painted tonight. The 'DigSilver' and the 'Hi Contrast HD' appear to be nothing more than plain old gray paint. Haven't opened the Pro Screen can yet.

Two of the three (Hi-Contrast HD & the DigSilver) come in fairly neutral. There are no reflective additives in either of those though. What you may see in the 200X images is nothing more than noise. These two appear to be nothing more than re-badged paint from Lowe's or Home Depot.

The powdered glass additive in the Pro Screen paint does seem to be refracting a bit which is to be expected from powdered glass.

Thought I would throw in some gain figures for the shades of gray of the paints under testing in this thread. The "totally diffusive gain" of a shade of gray is the Y value divided by 100. It is the gain a screen of that shade of gray would have if the screen was totally diffusive. It should be noted that even most flat finish paints have some level of gloss so they will have peak gain measurements slightly above TDG.

For these paints to really have the gains the sellers are reporting they would have to have a whale of a lot of gloss added, so much that hot spotting would be physically unavoidable.

So if I understand you correctly...the '3d' base paint is the worse of the 3 if you were really developing a 3d paint?

And to put this in perspective, could you post the same diffusive gain # for say BW & C&S?

So if I understand you correctly...the '3d' base paint is the worse of the 3 if you were really developing a 3d paint?
Absolutely. For passive 3D you need to have real metal particles in the paint to get the most polarity retention, and for both passive and active 3D you need to have a screen that is as bright as possible since all existing 3D methods cut the brightness of the viewed image by at least 50% and sometimes by as much as 75%.

For active 3D I would say the best screen would be one that is retro-reflective, which is not possible to do via a DIY screen paint.

And to put this in perspective, could you post the same diffusive gain # for say BW & C&S?
Cream&Sugar™ Ultra
RGB 226 226 226
LAB 89.9 -0.11 -0.09
xyY 0.312 0.329 76.01
Totally diffusive gain = 0.76
Peak gain = ~1.0

Black Widow™
RGB 186 186 186
LAB 75.5 -0.06 -0.08
xyY 0.312 0.329 49.1
Totally diffusive gain = 0.49
Peak gain = 0.89

As you can see, both C&S™ Ultra and BW™ have considerable gain over their basic shades of gray (the technical term for this is having a positive Geometric Gain) and neither hot spots. When people say that a mix must have a peak gain of at least 1.0 to not have negative gain they simply don't know what they are talking about.

Pls explain further.
A flat or even a matte neutral gray that is the same Munsell (N7.5) as BW™ would probably have a gain of .1 or more less than BW™ - .8 or less as opposed to .9. Thus adding the aluminum to BW™ creates positive gain. And that gain is less than 1.

Hopefully Harp will come and clean up this mess I may have created!
