Hello Shack;
I would like to know why so many people use this amp for their subs??:dontknow: :scratch: I am an live sound audio engineer by trade and I have found them to be harsh and unreliable on the road. They may work better in an HT environment and as a sub only amp. I have never used them in this way.

Please enlighten me.:reading: Also are there any other amps that I should be considering for my quad SS RL-P15 SLLT build.

Thanks in advance.

Well, these amps proved to be very good and reliable for HT use. I don't know where you got they are harsh and unreliable....(maybe bad units??).

For your quad subs, you would need at least 2.

The EP2500 is a superbly built and designed amplifier [mil spec PCB and double soldered joints, for example]. Not only does it measure spectacularly well as shown here [1 2 3 4]. It seems the majority, if not all, of complaints that occur about this amp are because of the brand and audiophiles not liking pro equipment.

Pics of my units:

Harshness? This is just psychological bias. No one is immune to it, not you, not me -- no one.

I honestly have no idea how they could be unreliable, unless this was an isolated defect sample. They have redundant double-soldered traces on doubled pc boards and use rather high quality parts through out. I'm not claiming it's impossible for them to be unreliable for the road. I just don't understand where the weakness/failure point would be.

Man there's a lot of talk about this amp lately.

As for harsh and unreliable on the road... I'm not sure why this would be either. An amp is an amp is an amp. Unless the units you had were being driven beyond their abilities I see no reason they would sound bad or fail over other units.

As for considering a different amp for your subs... I don't think you can go wrong with this one. It seems like everyone has one, and nobody complains about them. If you wanted a lot more power so you could drive all 4 with one amp, then you might look elsewhere but as blaser said, just get 2 :)

Thanks all for your reply. IIRC these were RENTAL units that MAY have seen better days. In the past I have gotten great advice on the Shack and therefore I will take the leap and get 2.

Thanks for the pix.

Thanks for all your help.

May the low Hz be with you.

Here are my complaints about MY ep2500

1) My attenuator knobs, when in a detent, do not stop at the same point. That means one channel is always a tiny bit louder than the other. I have no idea how to fix this.
2) When hooked up to my mid and tweet with their passive XO, it'll pop 10seconds after it shuts off. It won't pop on the channel my woofer is on because it has no passive XO.

Things I like about MY ep2500.

1) Excellent power/cost ratio
2) Low S/N ratio, thus making it useable for powering MF/HF speakers.
3) Easy enough to swap the fan.

I am thinking about picking this amp up and it sounds like a good sub amp. I can get it for $298 with free shipping. Is that a normal price or is there a place to get it for less that I don't know about?

Hey Tcarcio;
That is a good price. It's normally $350.

Where are you getting this price?

The S/N ratio was measured and is shown in the links I provided. With each channel at about -110dB there should be no worries with this specification.

Is it me or does the manual say the dip switch ''on'' position is different than what it say's on the back of the amp and if so which is correct?
