Glad I'm here; an idea for newbies like me

Hello everyone.
I'm really glad I found this forum. I feel like I'm among giants and I hope that as I get more knowledgeable (because of this forum) and experienced that someday I might have something valuable to contribute.

I do have an idea for something that might be helpful for other newbies like me. There's almost too much information in too many places on this site. It is an embarrassment of riches! I don't know where to start.

For someone like me it might be helpful if there were a place where home theater systems (reviews, discussions, etc.) were separated into price points. I'm not in a place where I can invest in $20,000 (or more) in equipment, but I'd like to get there sometime.

My idea would be to have categories like this: $1500, $3000, $5000, $10,000, etc. for home theater equipment. I'd probably be in the $1500 or possibly $3000 category and would really enjoy discussing and contributing with others in a similar position. Well, just a thought.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to being a part of this community.

Welcome to the Shack, Glad you could join us.
Hi Branton, welcome aboard the HTS

Great idea, the challenge is things change so fast in A/V that its hard to categorize items. What is in the $1000 range today will be discounted in only a few months to a much lower price. I tried that a few years back in a sticky thread but soon realized it was impossible to keep up.

Enjoy your stay with us.
Hi Branton..and welcome..
And we normally try to discourage someone that asks us to recommend a 1k HT starting from nothing. We would aim them at a few quality key components and recommend that start with that and build up.

Welcome Branton and thanks for joining us.

Hi Branton, welcome to HTS. Take you time, digest as much as you can, ask questions.
Needs here range from single component, to full HT systems. No one size fits all.
Welcome Branton to the Home Theater Shack. Spend some time reading and the site will come into focus for you.

Hi Andre (and the others who have kindly welcomed me and offered their thoughts).

Yeah, I'd agree that 1K starting from nothing is pretty low. My price breaks in the first post started at $1500, but that's probably too low also. In my case, I have a decent, but old receiver (no HDMI, no audio delay) and some decent, small, really old (1976), but good Yamaha stereo speakers. So, my goal is to build up over time.

This is a pretty incredible forum. I'm glad to be a part of it and to be welcomed even when I'm at so basic a level.

so I guess your saying any of those kits you see in stores for speakers under 1k are pretty bad? I don't know much about the consumer side of speakers. (I am recording studio/monitors type guy) I thought of picking something like that up sometime to add 5.1 to my setup. I still just use stereo for everything. I know I live in the dark ages. My phone doesn't take pictures or play video games either I can really only use my phone to call people :(.

Well, I'm kind of in the position of the blind leading the blind . . . where I am both of them! Anyway, I was saying that a complete 5.1 set-up for under 1K might be hard to do. I think one could get good consumer speakers for under 1 K, depending on the size of the room, etc.

Given my room configuration, etc. I don't think a $20,000 system would work for me. I want to put together a good system without over- or under-kill.

This is what I have:
Kenwood Receiver VR-60RS, info at http://manual.kenwood.com/files/B60-5573-00_EN.pdf (got this in 2008 or so).
Yamaha NS5 speakers (2), 10" rubber surrounded woofer w/ paper cone, and what looks like a 1 1/4" paper dome tweeter. The box is approx. 11" x 11.5" x 21.5". 40W nominal, 120W max 6ohms impedance. 2way bass-reflex speaker system, magnetic-shielding, FR 55 Hz-30kHz (-10dB), Sensitivity 90 dB/w/m. I got these in 1976.
Panasonic TC-PST60 60 inch Plasma
Sony BDP-S5100 3D Blu-ray
Still using TIVO HD DVR

Room logistics:
10 feet TV screen (60”) to eyes on couch
Room is 16 deep x 26 feet wide, but TV and couch are on the left side. Center of TV is 7 feet from left wall, which also has a fireplace in the center of that left wall. Behind the couch, 3 feet back, are mostly curtain covered glass sliders to the back yard. Right wall is 19 feet from center of TV. Standard 8 ft. ceiling with a knock-down texture.

(Like you, I have a flip phone (no pics) and currently, stereo set-up only.)

So, among other things I hope to learn enough from this forum to put together a plan for developing a good HTS that works in my place.

I have only used the ns10 studio types of yamaha and the derivatives of but not home speakers. I found the studio ones to always have a harsh high end. Of course when mixing you are allot closer to the speakers then in a home tv setup and I assume they have different eq curves.
