Hi, I was just wondering if you could help with a couple of questions regarding the black widow paint mix.

1. I accidentally bought the Dulux Wash and Wear 'Low sheen' tinted with Bermuda Beige 427-2 rather than the Wash and Wear 'Flat'. Would this significantly affect the performance?

2. Given that 'Auto Air Aluminum Fine have rendered the formula for making Black Widow™ useless', should I take the gamble that this supplier: airbrushmegastore . com (the only Australian supplier I could find) stock the older versions of the auto air aluminum fine or just start over and choose a different paint mix?

Thank you for your time

Honestly? No idea. I don't have any experience with Aussie paints. And I don't think Don does either. Only one way to find out...

Not necessarily. We have the new AAA pretty much figured out. It just takes a different base. :T

Thanks for your reply :jump:. Perhaps I should just buy the AAA first and then think about the base. What base should I use for the new AAA? Do you have any idea whether it'd be available in Australia?

The base will be determined by whether you get the new or old AAA-F. The old requires a base paint tinted to PPG 'Bermuda Beige' while the new requires a base paint that is tinted to a neutral gray.

I received my AAA-F today and its the new version. Specifically, what kind of neutral gray base paint should I ask for? I have a BenQ W1070 which will be ceiling mounted about 12ft from the 110-120 inch diagonal screen. The projector is in the living room which is not fully light controlled so there will be a bit of ambient light in the afternoon. I also expect to use it for 3D viewing.

Looking at the numbers at the elite projector calculator, this projector does not do 3D all that bright. For a 110" screen, you have 25fL in 2D mode after 500 hours. In 3D mode you have 6fL. That's quite the disparity between the two modes. How important is 3D viewing to you? If it's going to be fairly important to you, you may want to keep BW Ultra™ in the N9ish range and get a ND filter for 2D viewing. If 3D isn't that important at all to you, you can go darker and skip the ND filter. Screen size will matter as well, as stated above, the 110" screen gives you 25fL while a 120" screen drops it to 21fL.

How important is 3D and what will the screen size be?

I think I'll go with 115 inches diagonal. As for 3D, lets just say that if a movie is available in 3D, I'll watch it in 3D so fairly important.

Do you have access to Benjamin Moore paint? Yiannis found their white base to be neutral.

Otherwise I would just use whatever good quality flat white base that is available to you. When you're dealing with white, neutrality isn't as important as the darker grays as white is much more forgiving than grays.

To be honest I know absolutely nothing about paints and have no idea whether Benjamin Moore is accessible. I'll try asking. So I should just mix AAA-F with the flat white base (without tinting it grey)?

Just ask your paint store if they can color match Benjamin Moore colors. They should know what you're asking.

Yep. :T

Hey, well according to the guy I spoke to at Bunnings, Dulux don't make the flat white version anymore so I had to order it online. I received my order yesterday but they gave me the Matt instead :explode: so now I'm waiting for them to exchange it. I'll keep you updated :)

Actually, I think the matt finish would work fine as well.

About any white paint would work. Mech has tested the regular 4:1 ratio of base paint to AAA-F and found that the result is around N8.5. The only thing is that you MUST be sure you are using the new AAA-F or the resulting mix will be quite blueish.

Hi guys!

Signed up to say thanks for this thread as after doing research on Australian paints to use for around 2 weeks this was the most helpful!

I painted my screen yesterday and I'm very happy with it!

I got the new AAA mix so I used 'Dulux Wash and Wear Vivid White' mentioned earlier in the thread and primed it with Tuabman's flat primer. (1 coat of primer, 3 coats of Black Widow mix). So if any other Australians happen to stumble across this post I can report that it works great! Really blown away at the image quality increase! All that's left is to make myself a nice border.

Here's the tone of my finished screen using Dulux Vivid White:

As you can see its not in a very well controlled environment lighting wise so the boost its given to watch-ability while the sun is up is really impressive! Even my wife is impressed :D
