I just picked this tv up today 50 dollars. In the power supply the two caps are swollen like my p50s601. One of the driver chips on the lower sdr board is burnt. If i unhook the sdr board then the tv powers up with the top half working. I am going to replace the two caps in the power supply and look into ordering the lower sdr board. in my p50s601 It was the top sdr that was bad now this one its the lower one. everything looks the same as the p50s601.

If you have this model check out my other tread with info about this model. http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/hitachi/30302-p50s601-blue-power-light-flashing-3-times.html

Yeah I forgot it. Sonnie fixed it for me. He told me i could of fixed it myself two within 30 mins after posting if i click edit then click Go Advanced. I had no idea. Basicly this set had the same issue as my P50S601 that one had bad chips on the upper sdr board. This one has a bad chick on the lower SDR board. They both had swollen caps in the power supply. The same two caps. I will take photos and upload later.

I found a guy that says he repairs these boards. When I get mine back I will let you guys know If he does a good job repairing the SDR boards. From what he says the price will be about half of what the boards cost new.

I took a video of uploaded on youtube. The caps in the video don't look swollen but they are in real life. they are slightly swollen and starting to get puffy on top. I will be replacing them before installing the repaired SDR board.

The board on the right is X-SUS and the board on the left as your looking at the back is the Y-SUS. The top driver board is the SDR-U board and the bottom board is the SDR-D. I could of done a better job on the youtube video but I didn't feel like retaking it. I am just not good on video.

Jason,

This post was awesome. I was watching this same Hitachi tv when it just quit and flashed 3 times. Your video was exactly what I had going on. Got a new board and am having a little trouble finding those caps. Can you advise me as to where I can find them.

Jim

While there are many reputable dealers on ebay, I would be very wary of having someone do this level of work without some othert info about their qualifications and performance.

#10 ·
He was the only one I found that was offering to repair the boards. I looked at his feedback rateing and everyone was happy with the work. If you buy a replacement board other places there is no core charge. If he truely did ship it to me. I hope he shipped it with insurance. When I shipped him the boards I paid for enough insurance that i could replace the board with a new or a use board if one was found.

#11 ·
He may do great work. The point is that you don't know. How much of his good rating comes from these repairs on this board, and how many from selling shoes? There are reasons that no one repairs these. The failure rates on repairs like this are likely going to be very high for a number of reasons.

We see people all the time that get burned by ebay sellers trying to gain market share getting into things they really can't handle, or selling parts that they think are fine. It happens all the time with lamps and boards.

I hope this guy turns out to be good. There is a need for the service and we would love to be able to point people to a solution. Until more info is avaialble, however, we must remain skeptical.

I was looking at the feedback from these boards. Ebay feedback system tells you what people bought. Most of his feedback is from selling the repair service for the board. I just don't like the fact that I called him and never received a call back. I emailed him thru the ebay system without a reply to my question. So far with his communication I would say stay away. I know it may not be his fault if the post office lost the package, but he should be shipping them with insurance or delivery confirmation. I just would like to know if there is any way I can track it to try to find out were it's at or if the post office lost it.

Here is a copy of the repairs for this board from the first page of his feedback that you see on ebay.

I just received the board in todays mail. He didn't mail it out when he said he was. It wasn't shipped out until the 14th and today is the 17th. He told me last week it was mailed. It looks like he does good solder work. He put some kind of clear stuff around the chip over the pins so it doesn't have the gray stuff around the chip on that one. I am not sure if the stuff he used is made for what he used it for or if it should be thicker. He made it very thin.

I hooked it up and it works. He replaced it with the same kind of chip that was burnt. I took a video with my cell phone that i will upload the video to youtube and update this post! I need to turn the color down a little bit in the menu. I think the people I bought it from had it turned up to high. way to much color.

since its working I need help taking it up stairs to my bedroom. I will be replacing my samsung hlr5067w in my bedroom with this one. Now i dont know what to do with the samsung. It has a digital board from samsung parts in that tv that has a sticker on it saying it was modified or something. I am thinking I maybe better off to part out that samsung tv then selling it hole. I am sure all the parts are working it the tv but I am not sure how much life is left in the color wheel and all. I'm not having any issues but things to do wear out. I am thinking if i go to sell the tv i will be lucky to get 300 out of it and i can get around 200 out of the digital board and then sell the light engine and other parts and make more money off it. The same way with this Hitachi plasma. I could get more parting it out then selling it hole. But I am planning on keeping it and using it for the time being.

Good news it's been a month with no issues. :) That guy must know what he is doing with those SDR boards.

I also wanted to add an updated to this. It looks like Hitachi 50PD9800 also has the same issue with the two caps on the power supply going bad and burning out one or both of the sdr boards.

http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/hitachi/44286-black-horizontal-lines-hitachi-50pd9800.html

p50s601 p50h401 and p50pd9800 all had the same ND60200-0047 on the sdr-u board. The p50pd9800 is almost the same as the others.

This guy had issues with black bars on the video that is caused by the ribbon cables on the sdr boards not being right. I had the same issues with mine. I kept turning it off and back on doing one cable at a time until i found what one was making it happen.

after looking at the pdf files i have listed it looks like P42H401, P42H4011, P50H401, P50H4011, P55H4011 and P55H401 and P42T501,
P50S601, P50V701, P50X901, P50T501, P55H401, P55T501 and P60X901 Plasma Televisions. May have the same issues.

Hi Jason, I had a quick question for you but it seems I cannot PM you because I am a new member ( or maybe you have this feature turned off) I had a question about my Hitachi p50s601. Is there a way to check what board is out...When I try and turn it on..it blinks twice, pauses, then blinks 3 times repeatedly.

Thanks in advance!

ok here is the service manual for the p50h401 it may also work with the p50s601 since many of the boards are the same.

A power supply is not cheap. It will cost less to replace the two caps on the power supply. You need to test those chips on the sdr boards with a multi meter. In my p50s601 I couldn't see any burnt ones but a few chips tested bad. in my p50h401 i could clearly see a burnt chip.

You should be able to get two capasitors for less then 15 dollars.

Thanks again for all the links and info!

I have a friend that does soldering on micro chips so I will have him do all the work. He had a couple questions though about what kind of solder he should use on it etc.

Is there a model number on the two capacitor's that need replacing?

I did not check the board with a multi meter, I just unplugged the top one, left the bottom one in and the tv turned on, then plugged the top one in, and unplugged the bottom and it shut right back off. So I am assuming it's the top one thats out...? Please correct me if I am wrong and you think I still need to test it, thanks.

Do you really want to trust a vendor with no address and contact info other than a gmail account, with a website that all registration points to China, less than a year old, with no real history? The website does not even claim that the parts are new, nor does it have any information about return policy.

Have you contacted Hitachi to find authorized distributors, like Encompass or Andrews? If I am not mistaken most all of the reputable vendors have these on factory backorder. Why would a vendor in China have them when no one else does?

Be very careful when buying parts and do not be surprised if you get a used or rebuilt board that does not solve your problem. The ugly facts about board replacement are that there is a very high probablility that you can get defective parts and/or that the board you buy will not fix the problem. Even experienced servicers face this problem. There simply is not a good solution. You might get lucky or you might not.

My suggestion is to contact Hitachi and see what their customer service will do for you. Parts being unavailable is a legal issue in some states and you might get some relief from the manufacturer. It never hurts to ask.

Size only matters to the degree that the caps will physically fit. There are several electrical parameters that are very important, including capacitance, impedance, ripple current, voltage rating, etc. While smaller caps tend to have poorer performance when all else is equal, it is very difficult to generalize regarding size. There are many smaller caps that are better quality and larger ones that are poorer. You generally want caps that are the same size but this is not a critical matter compared to the other parameters.

#49 · (Edited)
the size does matter a little if they are to fat other parts are in the way and you have to solder wires to them and find another way of putting them on the board so they are not flopping around. so 30mm is like 1.18 inches its the roundness that matters for fitting on these boards. they can be taller without issue.

this one is 1.181 http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=P6809-ND

It should fit in the space. It's a little taller but it should still be fine.

That is a good price for the sdr-u board if they are a real company and all. I normally don't trust anything that has a gmail account.

If i remember right when I looked up a model 50PD9900 before it was an over seas set. They use the same sdr boards. They may have a supply of them if their power supplys are not known for having the same issue.

http://www.aliexpress.com/product-f...7173&PID=5243288&partner=CJ&channel=affiliate

I know people who bought them off this web page and they received na used boards. (The listing says its a used board from aliexpress. ) They are in hong kong. It seams like most venders over seas have this board in stock.

They also sell the buffer chips. The issue with ordering from hong kong it can take a 2 weeks to a month for you to receive them.

Just received the new capacitors from digi-key (Thanks Jason) They are the same diameter but stand taller (Shouldn't be an issue).

My question is, is the side with the markings going down the negative side? Thanks! What are the arrows on the board (Where the capacitors are connected) Is that showing negative or positive side?

#52 · (Edited)
If you look at the other photos on page 3 you will see the stripe is neg on the stock ones too and you can see what way they are pointing. http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/hitachi/38229-hitachi-p50h401-led-flashes-3-times-3.html

No those arrows I think maybe used for testing. If you look those arrows have one going each way you will make a cap go BOOM  if you put the neg at each arrow. both need to have the negitive side going the same way. Those arrows show going each way so don't look at those arrows! If you look at the tracings on the board they run in parallel.
