Audio equipment Subwoofer Loudspeaker Studio monitor Sound box

My brother bought these at Goodwill for $20, he wanted for the walnut but asked me about them. I figured they were DIY but wanted to get some opinions for him. He is still listening the BR1's I built 10 years ago.

Looking at the back they definitely appear to be DIY speakers.

Is that a 6" x 9" speaker in the bottom?

Yes it is. Can't imagine I'm factory speaker. All weird, horn tweeter too.

Is there something that can be in the woofer other than a whizzer cone? 'Cause that makes no sense in a 3-way design.
