Inputs to old Sony home cinema amp

Been trying to resurrect an old DAV-DZ860W system and the audio is pretty poor, I'm trying to find out why.
The input options appear to be:-
Optical
SCART
Phono
Does anyone know which one of these will give the best results ?

Sorry just checked and it is actually optical not HDMI - I'll ret playing a CD in the unit and see if it is an issue with the input or not.

You need to be on the hdmi input of the receiver on the tv to be able to see the receiver picture which means you can use the settings menu etc.
