Just a thought-can any driver work?

1288 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  HunterCottage
I was thinking about this at work yesterday. Is it so that as long as you know the parameters of the driver, you can always make a respectable sub-woofer?? It might need an enclosure the size of a house, but it would sound okay right?? Is it the quest for "usable" sized enclosures that make certain drivers unusable? In usable I am assuming both Music and HT...

Maybe this is the wrong forum, I apologize if it is so...

In general: yes you can. And this goes for any driver, not just subwoofers. As long as you know or can measure the T/S parameters you can build an enclosure for the driver.
Going a step further than dyohn and agreeing with what he said, you can make an enclosure for any driver. A good example is a sub that I have made with an ultra cheap lightning audio 12" driver. I had the specs and wanted a higher Q since I was only going to run it from 50-100 hz and got it sounding pretty decent in only a 1 cubic foot sealed enclosure. If I wanted a bit more depth I could have increased the size but I didn't need it. I couldn't rattle the house with that sub in any size enclosure though. Drivers are limited in some ways and a good box is not going to make them work magic.

Just to re-iterate what others have said really,

Of course you can, but as always, your limited to the drivers abilities, and its no good sticking a driver in an uber cabinet to try get more than that driver can deliver. Really, if your have targets and design requirements, you should try source a driver that suits your requirements. If you have drivers lying around, you can use them, but you need to remember its limits and work to those. The beauty of doing it yourself though is that your dont have to cut corners anywhere because of profit margins, and thats were we have a unique advantage.
No I don't have any drivers just laying around, I was just throwing ideas around in my head and realized that this should be the case. Well at any rate it feels good to know that I am beginning to understand some of all of this stuff... ;)

I've bought the CSS 12" trio, driver and 2 passive radiators, and the O Audio 500W amp. I'm just waiting for them to arrive (and hoping not to have to pay customs and taxes through the nose for them...)

I'm looking forward to getting this sub built...

You'll be happy with the performance of that combination. Post a build thread with lots of pics! :T
Roger wilco on that... just got to figure out where I'm going to do the cutting and router work...

If you can figure out your panel sizes before you buy the MDF, your supplier will usually cut those for you for a fairly insignificant cost. That would just leave you the driver and amp cut outs to do which are a bit easier to do at home as you no longer have to deal with the cutting up of a full size sheet of MDF.
Yeah, I was going to do that. If I just can get into my car I will be happy. I have a balcony that I should be able to do the rest...
