Looking For Feedback On My First (Proposed) Build

greetings all, i am planning on building two small subs to use with my monitor speakers to extend the bottom end. plan is to high pass the mains at around 100 hz, and let these little subs take it from there on down. i'm hoping to get usable output to around 40 hz.

my options for designs are two opposing 8" drivers or a single down firing 10". the only plate amp i could find that is small enough to fit on the cabinets is the 0Audio 300W, though a rack mounted amp isn't out of the question, i just haven't found one yet.

the 8" drivers that work best (according to my basic WinISD skills) are the TC Sounds Epic and JL Audio 8W3v3-4. when i modeled these in WinISD, i got the following:

TC Sounds Epic 8:
Qtc: 0.58
F6: 50.3 hz
F10: 34.9 hz
30 hz: 93.4 db
50 hz: 100 db
70 hz: 102 db

JL Audio 8W3v3-4:
Qtc: 0.76
F6: 46 hz
F10: 35.4 hz
30 hz: 95.5 db
50 hz: 103.5 db
70 hz: 106 db

in absolute terms, the JL has more extension and plays deeper. since i'm very new to this stuff, what i don't know is how these numbers translate into performance. that is, will the TC Epic 8 work for my intended application, or is a bit light?

switching to a downfiring 10" changes the game... F points drop by about 10 hz, and output goes up by about 6 db.

having no experience in this area, i can only say one option is louder/deeper than another, i have no way to know what i should be targeting for these various measurements (F6, F10, Output, etc).

any inputs would be greatly appreciated!

attached is a rendering of the proposed build with Epic 8's to give a better idea of what i'm thinking.

here they are... and thanks for any advice!

You want to build 2 subs and each sub has two opposing 8" drivers?

that's exactly right... two subs. the designs i'm playing with are a single downfiring 10" driver in each sub, or dual opposed 8" drivers in each sub.

tweaking the cabinet and removing the plate amp (reclaimed the space for internal volume), i was able to improve the dual JL Audio 8W3v3 to the following:

Qtc: 0.707
F6: 43.3 hz
F10: 32.9 hz

this is nearly identical to the TC Sounds Epic 10" model i'm playing around with.
Assuming your files are correct there's no comparison in output between the two. The modeling shows the TC sub in 5 liters for a Q of.7, kinda small for a pair of subs in one cabinet. Both models are with 150 watts and the 17.7 HPF and 1 db of boost in the 25 - 30 hz range that the Bash 300 comes with from the factory.

Thanks for doing that, Mike... i found the same thing regarding output. the JL has about 5 hz more extension and 6 db more output.

i calculated the following internal cabinet volumes once drivers, amp, stuffing, and bracing are accounted for (i can play with the internals, but the external dimensions are pretty much fixed so they match my monitors):

JL Audio 8W3v3: 24.38 L (if i remove the plate amp, i can get this as high as 24.38 L)
TC Sounds Epic 8: 8.46 L

could you send me the specifics on what you entered in WinISD to account for the 17.7 HPF and 1 db of boost?
Your Epic 8 file parameters are different from what is currently being sold.

i got my parameters directly from Thilo at TC sounds. when i mentioned that there were slight differences in what he sent me and what was posted elsewhere, he told me that the data he sent was more reliable and the specs needed to be updated.
The JL appears to be the clear winner for the amount of amp power you have.
Here's the project file for the JL, save it to the Projects folder in WinISD. The specifics for the HPF and boost are under the EQ/Filter tab.
