The term musical does not really describe a subwoofer. :bigsmile: The key to a subwoofer sounding is good is being able to start and stop when asked to but many things come into play I have learned in the world of HT. The room, the amp, the box and the woofer can all make a sub driver sound good or bad. My advice is EXPERIMENT tell it hurts. :rofl:

OK, that's what I had originally thought.
Well, musical by what I was meaning is being able to hit double bass passes in songs like Two Weeks by All That Remains. Otherwise, I don't know how would describe it.

Ah, I think I understand what you are saying. You are talking about the subwoofer being true to it's source. Do I understand correctly? A well designed box, a good woofer, and good amp and then a good setup will get you a nice accurate sound. :bigsmile:

Caveat:- In the Bass realm there are always neccessary compromises. Box/driver size. Location/Room size etc....

Also, What sounds good to you, or me, is subjective.

When I started building speakera a lot of people would not build bass reflex boxes due to their experience in the 80's where ill advised attempts with poorly understood Thiele Small parameters gave inadequate results!
Speaker/Box design has come a long way since then, including a vast array of software to help model the speaker/box interactions and, unless you do something totally inappropriate, a good speaker will be Ok in allmost all of the enclosures modelled.
"Musicality", I would suggest, is not going to be a concern for a Sub... Most sub output is going to be felt and the detail is going to be in the higher frequencies which is reproduced by your main speakers.
So if your mains don't sound OK then adding a sub isn't going to help.

I have another WinISD question.
If you have two drivers, and the box is let's say 10 cu.ft, could you just make two 5 cu.ft boxes and have the same performance as it shows in WinISD?

One big box with 2 drivers:
+ Drivers are close and are considered to be coherent. +6dB gain.
- Both drivers in same location and are affected by same room modes.

Two smaller boxes:
+ More even FR.
- Drivers are far apart and considered to be uncoherent. +3dB gain.

Having both drivers in one 10ft box versus havng each in a 5ft box is theoretically going to be the same. However there are real advantages to doing 2 boxes, such as placement flexibility, ease of movement, evening out room response, etc.

I'm just trying to get a better deal here, so please don't flame me. lol. Just playing the options also...

If I bought Dgilme's two AE C12.2's, they would actually perform somewhat better than the single IXL 18. But, If I needed more than the two twelves, I would have to get them soon becuase AE only has three more in stock for $75 each. The 4 twelves would perform nearly the same as the two IXL 18's, for around $180 cheaper. Do you guys think I would need more than two twelves or one IXL 18.2.2? Only problem is I don't know if the Behringer EP2500 would be enough to power four twelves.

I agree with Mike go with the 18! Trust me one 18 in large room is a lot of bass. One 18 in a bedroom is CRAZY BASS!!!!!! Get one of those used 18's and build a box. :bigsmile:
