Mike is right. The idea is that the tuning frequency limits excursion saving the sub from bottoming out. However, when you go below the tuning frequency the sub unloads BAD. The reason people say a very low tuned sub doesn't need a SSF is because when you're tuned to the low teens there isn't much sonic information below your tuning frequency to hurt the sub :)
