If you purchase the VSX-21, you would be using the HDMI inputs to decode True HD/DTS-MA in the receiver and would not be using the multichannel inputs.
Where the multichannel inputs might be handy is if you have a SACD player and want to use the multichannel input for that.
Your experience with your older AVR and the multichannel inputs is common. Often the issue is with bass performance. You should be able to raise the subwoofer level via the Blu Ray Player. Still getting a modern AVR will also give you Room Correction and better integrated bass.
