Hi Guy's,

I'm looking for a subwoofer or bass driver to be used in an open baffle. I have a pair of Audio Nirvana 15'' coaxials, which i have planned to use in an open baffle. I've briefly tested them and they roll off very quick below 500hz. I have an eq, but i'd rather only use it to tame the top end and a bit of the midrange honk, i'm also aposed for aesthetic reasons using a larger baffle and or wings.

I'm part way through an IXL18 LLT, so i'd like to fill the gap between 100-500hz.

I have 2 x Behringer FBQ3201 eq's, and 3 x EP2000's, so i'm able to power and eq both the the bass drivers and coaxials seperately.

I'd like a 15'' driver for the sake of simplicity building the baffle, and after searching for a long time, i've only come up with one driver. I've looked at other drivers overseas and calculated shipping and it's just going to work out to be too much.

Anyhow's, here are the specs on the driver, it's called the "Targa AutoSound 15''

Size 15"
Power 250Wrms
500Wmax
Imp. 3.9 Ohm
Res. 29.5Hz
Sens. 87dB
Mag. 156x20mm (49oz.)
Qms 4.33
Qes 1.16
Qts 0.92
Vas 159L

qts (0.92) and fs (29hz) seem ideal for an OB, and i can't see any reason why the sensitivity should matter given the power on hand, i can't however find the fq response or any graphs. The drivers are $150 each, which in Australia is pretty cheap. I can't seem to find much info on these anywhere on the web, so i may have to go on specs alone. Any thoughts?

Do you have the Le, BL, and SD for the driver? then I could model it in MJK's OB sheet. One thing i'll say is that for OBs you want a lot more linear throw. I'm not sure I would trust such an unknown brand, personally. FWIW, I suggest the Beyma 15P1000Fe. I'm pretty sure beyma has a distributor in AUS. Attached is a model in an 18" wide, 38" tall OB, 150W input power. Xmax is not exceeded until 24hz.

Sorry they were the only specs i could find after a long search. The Beyma looks very impressive, 100hz @ 112db. I will be using the high and low cut filters on the eq to keep the bandwidth between 100-500hz, so exceeding xmax well below that isn't an issue.

I did come across the Beyma distributor, "Centauri Audio" but without a rough price guide i kinda ruled them out. I've spent a good deal of time in the past looking at drivers then ringing to find the price only to find they are well beyond what i am looking to spend.

I've shot them an email, i found the 15P1000fe for 150 pound, so about $230 aus, but i highly doubt it will be anywhere near that, most likely much higher.

Yeah, I was looking at australian prices for some other drivers and they seemed a good 3X higher.

The main advice I can give, is to stick to something with demodulation sleeves / rings.

I'd imagine even 3-4mm of true xmax is plenty adequate for a 100hz crossover.

Hi Tom,

I was actually just signing in to say that i had checked them out, and also the Eminence Alpha 15.

I have contacted Hawthorne, and the price for a pair of 15'' Augies delivered in $515. The Alphas are available in Aus, however are still expensive compared to US pricing, and would be $330 for a pair delivered. Considering the Alpha's can be had for about $60 in the US and even with free shipping, it only further adds to the frustration.

At the moment they are the only 2 drivers i have found, but i think i should write to the Aus supplier and ask for a better price, it seems crazy that i could pay full retail internationally and shipping and still come out ahead.
