Room Sim Question

John has done an amazing job with REW, no doubt about it. I really like the Room Sim feature, it has a lovely interface and is very useful.

I've attached 3 screen shots of subwoofer placement in a rectangular room. Seating will be up against the back wall and will extend up against the side walls.

Screen Shot 1 - The subwoofer is against the wall and about 1.2m from the front wall. Here, the peaks at 27Hz can be adjusted by lowered by about 10dB and the peak at 50Hz can be lowered by about 7dB.

Screen Shot 2 - The subwoofer has been moved down to the centre of the long side of the room. Here the peak at 27Hz has gone. The peak at 50Hz can be brought down to correct it.

Screen Shot 3 - By adding a second subwoofer at the opposite side, the curve is just slightly smoother than the one in the previous screen shot above. However, the peak at 50Hz still stands to be corrected.

Which in your professional opinion is better for a single subwoofer setup ?

I presume a dedicated or stand-alone PEQ would be required. Is there a reasonably priced dedicated PEQ that integrates well with REW and is easy to use via an intuitive GUI ? The focus here is on the lows but it would be nice to have a dedicated PEQ that can handle multiple channels in a 5.1 or 7.1 configuration and is high-res enough to handle fine / accurate adjustments.

It would be really nice to have a dedicated PEQ that automatically applies the filters from REW and then presents it in a form of a before and after graph. The graph could then have multiple anchor points that could be moved up and down and that would ultimately reflect in the PEQ.

Hi Sam. Mini DSP is an option for a peq and they work with REW in that REW will generate the filters in its EQ section from a single or from an average of several frequency sweeps at multiple room locations. REW saves a file that is then loaded into the Mini DSP. You will find plenty more info in this forum and at mini dsp's website including the usage instructions with REW.
Also, thanks for reminding me that REW and John are amazing. Just finished making a long overdue donation. Thanks John!

Thanks for your input and help John, I will certainly look into MiniDSP. I agree it makes such a positive difference when the person behind an excellent product is so friendly, generous and down-to-earth - Quite rare in this time and age.

Any comments on the questions I asked in terms of the ideal position for a single and/or double subwoofer ?
I'm not the best person to answer on this subject but IMHO you will find experimentation will be required for best sub placement in almost every room. There seems to be too many factors specific to the room to figure in advance where is best. The good news is the process of getting a room to sound good can be a lot of fun. If you would like to read on the subject of ideal sub placement I might suggest this link to the Harmon white papers. http://www.harman.com/EN-US/OurCompany/Innovation/Pages/WhitePapers.aspx?CategoryID=White papers
