Sealed TC Sounds LMS Ultra 5400 18" NOOB STYLE!!

Hello HTS!!

I have been reading over this forum for about 4 weeks now and only been a member for one. Got some pretty good ideas about doing a DIY Subwoofer from reading through the threads. I specifically like a couple members builds ( Island1000 and bassthatHz) that involved an LMS ultra 5400 18". It looked simple, yet effective.

Simple is definately key here due to the fact i have ZERO wood working experience (Steel worker by trade). In fact i bought a router and am going to have to go buy the table saw this week. Maybe one or two tools depending on if its something that would make it alot easier. I plan on building more stuff in the future so i look at it as an investment.

The reason for this build is that i have tried a few compact high dollar subs that sound good but just don't have the umph i am looking for. So got rid of them and for the $$ i think i can do better. ... Hopefully

I am going to try and keep this as detailed as i can, so that way others can chime in and point out my mistakes. I imagine there will be quite a few lol. Also, so others with the same skill level can see what i do and can maybe learn something off my attempt. At the least, it should make for entertainment

Here is what i got comming for the Build so far:

1) TC Sounds LMS Ultra 5400 18"
2) CROWN CE4000
3) Dayton Audio ADQM-RCAF RCA Jack To 1/4" Mono Plug
4) Round Speaker Terminal 2-7/8" Gold Spring-Loaded

-I purchased a used but good shape milwaukee router 5615-21.

-I am looking at either the RYOBI r4510 saw or the bosch 4100. Still undecided so any suggestions would be helpful

Got other various tools such as jig saw, circular saw, reciprocating saw, little power sander, drills, etc.

I am undecided about a EQ. My original idea was to buy the ANTI-MODE 8033. The guy i got the Crown from said it was unessesary due to it had a crossover built in???

For wood was thinking MDF

EDIT: When I first did the write up I didn't expect it to grow so huge. so to save you time from reading several pages, here is a video of how the build turned out. the mic on my phone makes it sound weird. sucker is a beast. made this video 4/6/2016

My amp is 5/8 of the way up. The SMS-1 volume was turned on 77. and my receiver was on 27. So still more power to be put on it, however im afraid its going to start rattling the seals loose on my windows or cracking drywall. The dishes in my china hutch across the room in the kitchen rattle.

There are some Bass songs that can get the cone moving alot, next time i come across one on pandora and nobody is home, i will make a video of it.
Posting to YouTube look like you got a "dot" in the wrong place. If you look at the link on your post here Post #396..., you got a dot in the wrong place.

Try it again for youtube.com
thank you, that worked

Would like to see more cone movement... :)
Got it. We used a 4.2 internal volume. It can be seen here at --- Data-bass.com
To small box for the LMS you get to high box distorition you pass 162dB at 30hz and the Q value is 0.605

? 162db in anything other than a SPL designed vehicle is next to impossible.

The internal pressur is 162dB and is to high not what u can in sound pressure spl race
Look at the grafs. And then you get to high box distorition and that affect the sound quality

I still can't believe the difference the EQ made. This sub is AMAZING. I know for a while i thought my amp wasn't big enough. The amp is PLENTY. I finally was able to get the house to myself and test some limits. i didn't mess with the gain on amp. Just started turning up the sms-1 volume. when i got up to 50 i decided i had better go put on some ear protection. then went up to like 77. This sub has some awesome excursion!! (but yall know that already, just fun seeing it in person). All that time i was trying to get it to move like the one in the video the other member did, but couldn't because i thought i was bottoming it out and that was all it could do with my amp or maybe i screwed the design up on my box. It was neither. it was that anti-mode messing me up. just wrong eq for the job. You can sit in front of this thing and feel the bass in your chest. Not once even at this volume did the amp start flashing red lights or any pop noise. At this point i didn't see a need to raise it any louder, i now know what everyone Raves about when the talk about the LMS 5400. My beloved paradigm seismic 12, has absolutely nothing on this DIY project. Well worth the time, effort, and $$. I recommend it Highly
Thanks for the follow-up Brandon. You've now removed all doubt for everybody that an LMS -5400 DOES what the original experimenters/DIYers said it does. Excellent work.
The video is interesting . . . . even though the LMS cone doesn't show much movement, the driver moving air pushing the box over does.

Yeah, it was just the song playing. There are scenes//songs that can get it moving. unfortunately its rare that i have a moment without the kiddo. i don't want her having hearing problems cuz daddy wanted to crank up his new toy. But one day............

opening scene from the movie immortals. sorry the video is cockeyed. all settings are the same as previous video

Ha, I bet that would have imploded that piece of cardboard you used in your last video.
Wow! Impressive stuff on those vids :T

Killer to see this project working out for you.

Check out Luke's system... His video's were one of my primary sources of inspiration for joining the LMS Club...

Now that's movement!

Check out his other videos...
I have seen Luke's system, impressive indeed.

I used to own a pair of LMS Ultra's but sold them to continue building subs. After experiencing what 4 LMS Ultra's can do I know wish I would have kept my pair and added another pair :duh:

The problem with 1 or 2 LMS Ultra's is they are like a gateway drug, there so good you want to add more and are rewarded for such sub lunacy. I am having LMS withdrawal as we speak, I need a Linear Motor fix bad

I'll be ordering a pair as soon as parts express re-stocks them. My room is only about 1,400 cuft, so hopefully a pair will satisfy my itch. I will literally have no more space in my room to squeeze in another pair...

:(

What all do you have now sub? I'm on my cell or I would browse your profile to try to find out for myself...

I was trying to energize almost 4000 cuft with a pair of LMS and it was almost enough. I think you will experience bass nirvana with a pair in your room!
I have been experimenting in my room as time permits to find the best locations for subs. Right now I am on 8 12" subs in dual opposed config with a single Mal-X 21". I also have a pair of 18" Mal-X but am not using them right now. I have other subs as well but don't want to come off as a sicko:nono:

My system is actually in pieces right now as I try to put together the new bass array and see how it works. I think I have found the right spots to maximize both output and extension but I need to finish my builds first to try them out. I am going to try a Bossobass style sonotube tube build for the 8 12" subs as I have always wanted to see the effects of having the subs firing on the floor, half space of the room and ceiling to see if this really does provide the best bass. 8 15's would be better like Bosso does it but I already had the 12's so for the experiment my only expense is the sonotube and end caps.

Since the LMS Ultra's are so far out to order I was thinking of ordering a pair of LMS-R 15's and doing a submerrsive style enclosure. I have a friend who say he could bring along a single LMS Ultra and someone else might be able to bring a Submersive so we can compare. In WinISD the dual LMS-R 15's outperform a single LMS-Ultra and when speaking with Thilo, the owner of TC Sounds, he recommended the dual 15" set-up over the single 18" LMS-U.

This is my design of Nirvana...

The wife doesn't know it yet, but our next HT will be financed into the home we have built... I think a nice dedicated space to accomodate my Nirvana wall is in order.

Yes, that's 32 Ultra's... One can dream...

The Nirvana wall looks sensible to me :D
