Sealed TC Sounds LMS Ultra 5400 18" NOOB STYLE!!

Hello HTS!!

I have been reading over this forum for about 4 weeks now and only been a member for one. Got some pretty good ideas about doing a DIY Subwoofer from reading through the threads. I specifically like a couple members builds ( Island1000 and bassthatHz) that involved an LMS ultra 5400 18". It looked simple, yet effective.

Simple is definately key here due to the fact i have ZERO wood working experience (Steel worker by trade). In fact i bought a router and am going to have to go buy the table saw this week. Maybe one or two tools depending on if its something that would make it alot easier. I plan on building more stuff in the future so i look at it as an investment.

The reason for this build is that i have tried a few compact high dollar subs that sound good but just don't have the umph i am looking for. So got rid of them and for the $$ i think i can do better. ... Hopefully

I am going to try and keep this as detailed as i can, so that way others can chime in and point out my mistakes. I imagine there will be quite a few lol. Also, so others with the same skill level can see what i do and can maybe learn something off my attempt. At the least, it should make for entertainment

Here is what i got comming for the Build so far:

1) TC Sounds LMS Ultra 5400 18"
2) CROWN CE4000
3) Dayton Audio ADQM-RCAF RCA Jack To 1/4" Mono Plug
4) Round Speaker Terminal 2-7/8" Gold Spring-Loaded

-I purchased a used but good shape milwaukee router 5615-21.

-I am looking at either the RYOBI r4510 saw or the bosch 4100. Still undecided so any suggestions would be helpful

Got other various tools such as jig saw, circular saw, reciprocating saw, little power sander, drills, etc.

I am undecided about a EQ. My original idea was to buy the ANTI-MODE 8033. The guy i got the Crown from said it was unessesary due to it had a crossover built in???

For wood was thinking MDF

EDIT: When I first did the write up I didn't expect it to grow so huge. so to save you time from reading several pages, here is a video of how the build turned out. the mic on my phone makes it sound weird. sucker is a beast. made this video 4/6/2016

Check out Luke's system... His video's were one of my primary sources of inspiration for joining the LMS Club...

Now that's movement!

Check out his other videos...
he has a massive amp on it. I had thought about ordering one of the clones, however with just my one sub it seemed pointless. It already gets louder than i can listen to. However if i ever decide to add another sub then i am going to get one.

I'll be ordering a pair as soon as parts express re-stocks them. My room is only about 1,400 cuft, so hopefully a pair will satisfy my itch. I will literally have no more space in my room to squeeze in another pair...

:(
what do you have now? are you going to log your build?

Currently I only have a Definitive Technology Supercube Reference.

Yeah, I'll post up my build when I get everything in order. I don't want to be one of those guys that starts a build post and it takes a while (months) to see results.

I won't be able to gey my hands on the Ultra's until August, but the LG Clone will be shipping to me by early next week... :)
let me know when you get the amp. curious as to how long shipping and handling takes. I've had stuff from china as quick as 5 days and others as long as a month

I know someone who has ordered a couple of clones about 6 months apart and both times it took about 5 to 7 days to California.

This one is for you guys...

I would have embedded this if I wasn't on the cell...

Checkout the MOVEMENT of that W6!!!
Wow!

That W6 seems indestructible! Never seen a cone just go crazy like that, I like :D

Yeah, i was (am) throughly impressed. I've owned this W6 for quite sometime and have been pushing it with a JL 1000/1 in my car and have never given it a workout like that... The movement seemed a bit more linear in person than what my camera could capture and the horrible sound you hear is mainly from port noise. Wonder how clean it would sound in a sealed box. :)

I plan on giving the LMS the same workout when they arrive... Just a few short weeks now till they are back in stock at PE!

Brandon needs to quit playing around and give us a real video of his Ultras... ;)

The LMS are the ultimate subs but there achilles heel is they bottom HARD and if you do it hard enough you will mushroom the cone and probably damage the VC needing a new top. Notnyt bottomed his eight LMS Ultra's and nearly soiled himself so now he uses an 11hz HPF each and every time. Luckily for him it was not that bad but I can show you pics of an LMS Ultra that met an early death from over excursion :yikes: Not the LMS Ultra's I used to have, I learned my lesson with an earlier TC Sounds sub and have a nice round dent in the cone :innocent:

I think you might want to change your plan :nono:
I didn't want to do it, I get a tear in the corner of my eye everytime I see this pic :crying:

Very aware of the bottoing out issue of the LMS...

The testing I was doing with the W6 was very controlled. I mean, I wad making very minute increments in power as I found the limits of the sub.

So, if I take my time (and I'm careful) the LMS should at least give me some small warning before completely pooping itself, right?

Or is going to go from 0....to...dent without any kind of warning?

I'm very familiar with Not's build, I didn't see where he bottomed out all eight at once though! I think pushing his system to that level in-and-of-itself would push ones physical limit...

130db+ @ 10z sounds soooo fun...
I was having a discussion of why a HPF should be used with sealed LMS Ultra's when Notnyt chimed in and told the story of how he bottomed his 8 pack. He was running his system at or over reference levels and luckily didn't damage anything but it scared him into always using a HPF.

I always ran my LMS Ultra's with a HPF, better safe than sorry I figured after seeing that mushroomed LMS Ultra. I really don't know if it just just happens, no warning than bottom, but I would figure that's the case. The other TC sub I bottomed, going fine then slam, really makes you jump fast and there was no audible warning before hand. I was running that sub without a HPF and a decent amount of boost so I had it coming.

I think with the LMS Ultra it is so clean that even though it measures loud it doesn't sound as loud because of the lack of distortion. Distortion adds to the perceived volume so you tend to want to turn up the volume with a low distortion masterpiece like the LMS Ultra.

Maybe take some time to learn the limits of your LMS ultra's before giving them the same workout.

Oh yeah...

I always stretch before heavy lifting...

I still have a bit to learn in the hobby, so eventually I plan to get the protection I will jeed in place so I don't damage my gear from carelessness...
The problem with the "Oh I'll get some kind of warning..., right?" mode of operation is "how do you know when you have had your warning?" Maybe you have already had yours.

What problem are you referring to... overheating from chaffing or wearing through copper coil windings from chaffing? Hitting bottom is the least of your worries.

Heat caused the deformities you saw and you will not see "it" coming.

If it was heat, I would have "smelled" it coming.

The deformities YOU saw were from the video recording latency of my camera phone.

In person, the sub was maintaining it's linearity, not deforming.

While I agree that I was pushing the sub hard, it took it in stride... Just did it for everyone's entertainment. :)

I'd be willing to bet that when I take videos of the Ultra's in action, it will be similar to the W6.
that W6 was really getting with it!!!!!!! I was waiting for it to tear appart. I tossed the idea around on the super amp, but really can't justify getting it. With kids in the house and only one sub, i could really have no need for that much power. now that the new EQ is in place, the crown ce4000 or more than enough..............Also another deciding factor is, im getting married in hawaii next week and looking to buy a motorcycle as my wedding gift to myself lol. So money is all tied up
I started this build on 4/30/2012 its now 1/27/2014. Still have the same setup and it has never moved from its spot next to the TV. This build was WELL worth the time, effort, money. I honestly believe the sub sounds better now, almost 2 years later, than when I first built it. when someone new comes over to watch a movie, its always ... ""WOW!!!""...or..."that sounds awesome" Thanks again Shack for all your help, couldn't have done it without ya
That's awesome - I'm very happy with my Ultras too. There are very, very nice subs for sure.

LOL good to hear it hasn't moved and is still operational.

I recently lent my LMS out for a GTG. Packing, carrying, and transporting the 6 cu ft. box with the LMS mounted inside was an interesting challenge. I decided having the driver positioned facing up was safest way to move it. Moving the box with the driver on it's side with the driver hanging from the mounting bolts would put too much stress on the MDF at the bolt locations. If the transport vehicle hit a RR crossing or pothole I was worried the driver would get torn out of it's mounting. I used nylon straps with ratchet clamps to tighten the straps around the box. I had two straps running under the box fastened to a heavier strap running parallel to the ground about 10 inches from the top of the box. This arrangement allowed two men to lift by the parallel strap lifting against the straps that went under the box.
Anyway the box and driver arrived safely and was fully functional when set up.
This is the first time I've heard my unit played outside my house in a different environment. My laptop which controls the amp's EQ was down so the unit played with my house curve logged in the amp.
It did well. The GTG members wanted the Crown amp hooked up bridged for 3200 watts. I usually ran it with one channel @ 1200 watts.
The unit filled that open listening area with more low end than anything else being displayed in the house. I had my demo test disc that had single frequencies from 10Hz to 100Hz spaced at 10Hz steps. The cone JUMPS with 3200 watts at the 10HZ setting. It looks like full extension to me. Had to be close to the bottom. The dubstep demo disc was vibrating the concrete floor of the living room and the various pieces of furniture. One of the owners lamps traveled across the end table and tilted against the wall without breaking. The house had not been LMS prepared.
The LMS was paired with two electrostatic speakers. The cross-over point needed to be changed from 80Hz to 120Hz for best integration with the electrostatics. After the loud demo stuff was over and the more detail specific material was offered, the SQ of the LMS was very evident playing with the electrostatics.
Only problem that resulted was that most members at the GTG now want an LMS. :innocent:
My LMS is about 6 years old and hasn't had a problem. The LMS will suck up all the juice in an XTi 4000. It's a good match bridged. I don't need that much volume. I get by using one channel for the LMS and the other channel for dual RCF 21's in a 9 cu ft. sealed enclosure.
Good luck Brandon. Thanks for all the fun.

Crazy its been 2 years since that last update. Still running strong and hasn't budged from its spot. I've been Gearing up to completely redo my truck. Receiver, all speakers, and adding sub, strictly sound quality, nothing to hear from blocks away. Since my first post here, I started working as an engineer and my main tool is Solidworks 3d modeling. Man does it make designing enclosures a whole lot easier. I'm debating on redoing this LMS-5400 enclosure. Ill be able to get it down perfectly with this software.
If you make another enclosure for the 5400 let us know how it turns out.
I'm still using my 5400 and the 2 21inch RCF NEOs for the bottom end.
I'm now using the XTi 4000 bridged for the 5400 and a Peavy IPR 3000 driven by a Behringer Ultra Curve Pro for the RCF 21s.
I'm so spoiled by the sound quality and power of the lower end that when I listen to other systems for any length of time,
I get pissed off.
My wife decided to buy a system to go along with her new HD 32 flat screen TV. She bought a JBL sound bar and the matching subwoofer to go along with it.
I was in the store when she bought it. She made me listen to ALL the sound bars and subwoofer setups Best Buy had, about 10 of em. I'll admit the JBL sounded the best of all of them even though the sub only had a 6.5 inch woofer. My wife thought she had the equal to my stuff down in the theater room.
N O T !
It turns out that although the JBL sub puts out BASS, it's all one note and THAT gets really aggravating after about 20 minutes. Who wants to listen to a
70 HZ note all night long whether it's for a man's voice, a roaring inferno, or the pods emerging in "War of the Worlds".
All you guys know what I'm talking about.
All those days of experiments we made and all those different brands of sub drivers and a thousand different box builds and determining how much amp power was needed to satiate our hunger for loud, literal gut wrenching, pants flapping, wall moving, earth shaking subwoofer power, finally paid off . . . . and I am at ease with the world, MY world . . . . where 10HZ on down is the norm . . . . . where 100dbs @ 20HZ is required . . . . . and the meek may not enter . . . . and our hearing won't last past 5 years.
