Shallow box for Maelstrom-X 18

I'm thinking about building a rather wide and tall -- but shallow box for a Maelstrom X.

It would be sealed.

I was thinking about maybe 12" deep. Probably 8cu ft or so in volume. So it would be 1ft deep x 4 ft tall (or wide) x 2 ft.

Is that too shallow?

I thought I read a while back about a min depth recommendation behind a driver. I believe the depth of a 18" Maelstrom is 10.5".

Building it to go behind a screen-wall. So I can go a couple inches deeper - but probably not beyond 18".

I wouldn't see a problem with 18" but that again depends on whether you would be going sealed or ported. Sealed I can't see any issues at all. Ported depends on length of port and how you would fit it in.

In general a subwoofer enclosure need only clear the woofer mechanism itself, and if the driver has a vented pole piece (such as the Maelstrom) then you need to leave an inch or two between the back of the motor and the nearest baffle. Some people recommend leaving half the motor magnet diameter, but that's only a generality. Other than that, geometry really does not matter significantly in a subwoofer system as long as the proper net volume is attained.

I'm doin sealed - want the infrasonics!

Thanks for the feedback!

I think I'll aim for a 2-3 inches of clearance...
Go for it and let us know how it works out! Don't forget to brace it.
Also remember if you are going to do it standing upright make sure the driver is at the bottom otherwise it will probably fall over.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the thought! I actually thought of that while looking at another shallow build with a heavy driver....
