Strange request, AVR that has discrete audio inputs?

1488 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Wayne A. Pflughaupt
I'm looking to do the opposite of what a lot do instead, I want a AVR that I could put external, independent audio into the 6-7 amps, and use them separately from the rest of the AVR's circuitry.

I basically want a 6 channel amp, that I can use for speaker development with active crossovers, so, if I'm doing a 3 way, I need 6 separate channels I can plug my own 6 source channels into.

So, how rare is this in AVR's? Any newer, or older, ones have this as a feature? I've done some looking around, and haven't found much, or what to call this feature. Older amps would be great as well (nice and cheap on the 2nd hand market) and I don't really need or care about whatever features they have. But probably want something 7.x, so I can get my 6 amp channels..

Thanks in advance...

Something like this is probably going to be your cheapest solution, just get however many you need and stack them up.
6-channel direct inputs are relatively common. They still run through the tone controls and volume controls of the AVR but you could use for crossover development. Input output jumpers that allow complete separation of the preamp and main amp functions are now quite rare. During the 15 years I spent at Sherwood, we made one AVR circa 1997 that had the ability to completely separate preamp from main amp.

If your going to bi or tri amp using active crossover setup you might consider this crossover unit as its infinitely adjustible on all outputs and not expensive....

You are looking for a receiver that has "Multi-channel analog inputs"
as mentioned above they are quite common but only in the mid to upper tear receivers so above aprox $500.

If I understand correctly, you’re looking for a receiver that has direct inputs for each amplifier channel, and also has build-in crossover selection as well (presumably full-range capability with high-, low-, and band pass options, based on your stated application of speaker design and development), for each amplifier channel?

So, how rare is this in AVR's?
It doesn’t exist. You will need outboard amplification and an outboard electronic crossover processor, like what RTS linked. Alternately, you could go with late model professional-grade amps that have on-board digital processors.
