Looking good!

Looking at this URL here:
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49678

I see a jpg that outlines 2D specifications. Are these the plans you were referring to? Is there other pages/scans that document the other dimensions like width of enclosure or anything else? I see you have a mouth opening where as the design below doesn't show any output besides where the drivers are mounted. How did you determine the size of this opening? And is there confirmation these are truly the TH-SPUD designs from Danley and not someones own idea?

Has there been anyone else besides you that has tried out this design yet? I'm anxious to see some discussion about this design and it's results!

I peaked over at DiyAudio forums and saw a couple of posts by you in the big collaborative TH post but didn't see much other activity of others trying to recreate the TH-SPUD like you are.

Are you planning on getting another amp to power your TH-SPUD?

Thanks for the info on your cutting process. If this project deams sucessful it sounds like it may be a pretty easy build for people who follow your lead. We all appreciate all of the hard work and testing you've done so far.

On another note. Do you happen to have any pics of the SPUD with the top on now? Would love to see how she looks!

What did you decide on the damping? felt? Polyfill? or ? and where did you apply it? The entire horn structure or just behind the drivers?

Was the reason you didn't arch at 60 degrees because the drivers you choose could actually fit, unlike bulky the TangBand 740Ps which would butt their magnets against the enclosure?

I'm very anxious to see how your testing goes this weekend. I'll be very interested to see how it performs against your current array of subs.

Do you have an SPL meter and REW handy?

It appears the TH-SPUD was originally designed for almost near field listening position. To be placed under a couch or behind it near the listener. As Danley describes it the "Horn Bubble".

I am pretty sure its pretty heavy but I wouldn't mind seeing some plots of how it sounds in different positions. Corner loaded, front (at least 8 feet away from listener), Behind (3 feet or less away from listener (horn bubble).

A MAX SPL plot too if you can. And I would really value your impression versus your other subs.

Again we really appreciate all of the effort you've put into this project thus far. I'm really looking forward to the results.

Edit: Reading more from Danley about positioning:

Try placing the outlet for each spud in the outer corners with the box moved into the wall / wall corner. This produces an acoustic mirror for the box by being up against the corner and raises the efficiency and lowers the low corner.

I must premise this statement with the fact that I am not well versed on the subject... but wouldn't a ground filed measurement outside provide us with the best FR comparison to other subs? In this situation I'm not sure how far you would place the mic from the opening? maybe 1 meter (like sensitivity tests).

Hopefully you've got some help to move this thing around :)

Good point. An outside measurement at 10 meters like Danley tests would be ideal. I keep forgeting he is in FL with probably nice weather unlike where I am :/.

Couple of thoughts.

Do you think the 60 degree angle perhaps plays a bigger role in the enclosure than just allowing the bulky W8-740P drivers to fit? What we do know is the original drivers RMK had were significantly smaller than the W8-740P drivers Danley sent to him later. I am inclined to think that 60 degree angle was more than just a design augmentation to allow the drivers to fit as the first one could have fit without the 60 degree angle.

Old driver on left, new driver on right:

I know there was much discussion in the collaborative tapped horn forum around the Trio 8 driver. Some said it may work, some said it may not. The only real way was to try it. Do you think the W8-740P driver would be a good thing to try? Perhaps gaining better performance?

retrospect is always 20:20. I'm just very curious to know if you had used the W8-740P drivers with the 60 degree angle, mimicing the Danley design verbatim if the performance would have been better?

Based on your comments so far I would have expected a SPUD to outperform your existing array of subs as from all of the reviews I've seen "They are 2x a DTS-20" and "outdue quad fathoms".

Perhaps the placement is a larger factor? Have you tried corner loading that beast?

I wish I lived closer. I'd love to come and help.
