This is a thread about paints for a dedicated and treated theater room. No ambient light. Dark floors, ceiling, walls and furniture. To paraphrase a great movie quote: "Ambient light? We don't need no stinking ambient light!" If you aren't prepared to paint your ceilings a dark color--or even install flocked acoustic ceiling tile--then this thread and these paints aren't for you. If your PJ in "Best" color mode and low lamp will provide 30 ftl on your screen size, then the same caveat. This thread is only for those interested in the best picture possible and will do whatever the room requires to achieve it. It's for big screens--120" plus--and dark rooms. Again, Dark floors, ceiling, walls, furniture and ZERO ambient light. If this isn't you, join in for the fun, but research one of the great gray DIY screen mixes available.

This thread is long term, so don't expect results any time soon. Paint needs to be rounded up, mixed, sprayed or rolled, and allowed to cure. Then the testing fun will commence.
Testing methodology. The testing done will follow scientific method. First and foremost that means that the test will be blind. I will not know what sample I am testing! Everyone knows I favor Glidden Diamond 450. I know that too, and human nature is to try and prove ones currently held opinion. I am going to paint the different samples on identical panels. My wife will then number them and seal the names in an envelope. The samples will then cure for at least 30 days, possibly several months given that the holidays and then my Thailand vacation are upon us. Once all is in place, I'll cover my current screen with sheets and place samples up both one at a time and multiple samples at times and perform subjective testing. Again, I won't know which is which. I'll post what screen shots seem useful, but of course I'll only identify the samples by number. Every one will get a chance to chime in which they think is best, but they won't know which paint it is! After all subjective testing is done, I'll do objective, instrumented tests. I'll be using the latest Calman and Babelcolor software for this part of the tests along with an i1 Pro spectraphotometer. I'll post CIE diagrams so we can have hard evidence as to which paint has colors that "pop"!
I'll post other data as well. I'll be very thorough in posting my test methodology, so everyone knows exactly what I'm doing. I'm open to suggestions as far as tests to be performed and methodology. I'll also post all of this as we go along, and I'll still be in the dark as to the identity of each sample, as will you, the reader.
Once all testing is done, we can all rank the samples based on our own preferences. After that, the finale. Then, and only then, I will open the envelope and identify the samples!

I wish the testing could be "Double Blind", but I know of no one around me that has adequate skill to paint the samples. At any rate, given the time involved in curing and the state of my 54 year old memory, I'm pretty sure I won't have any idea which sample is which! If there is someone in the Portland/Vancouver area that wants to volunteer to paint the samples, that would be great!
