Toshiba 42HP66 Screen Blew

12820 Views 31 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  fhorn
Hello,

I currently have a 42HP66 Plasma TV that I purchased 5 years ago.

I was watching TV the other night and I heard a click and the screen dimmed.

I shut if off and turned it on a few hours later.

The screen was still dim(very dark) and had black blochy spots that seem to receed a little.

I took a video of it. This is how dark the screen is now and you can see the black blochy spots:

Has anyone seen this before and know whats wrong?

Should I get it fixed or just buy a new tv?

Thanks for your time,

I apologize

I am Autistic But, NOT retarded as some people call me (My Brothers)

But, I surely do appreciate all of you guys help

I managed to get the HP Plasma Set working and, this blew their mind and, gave me, finally, the chance to say "Who is the stupid one now" after they all tried for months

I figure all one needs to do is, at least, try to ask for help and, possibly he might get is. But, IF one never asks, then One can never find out. Right?

I owe getting that set working to all you here and, I thank you.

I think I might finally be successfull with a little help. I already have a lot of patience

Thanks again

Oh yeah, How can I find info or help with a few other sets I am working on here? I have 6 Plasma Sets here which are all obviously not working now

ANY help would be greatly appreciated in my adventure

Johnny,

If you are willing to work and pay attention to detail, then you will be a good tech. I will help where I can, and I'm sure the other experienced electronics techs feel the same way. We love to help any person willing to learn, but can't stand someone who simply wants us to tell them how to fix something. Fixing anything takes detailed troubleshooting. Learn the theory of operation of any device you want to fix, and you have completed half the battle. When you know what isn't happening, and where, then you can find the problem and fix it.

Remember to follow the posting rules, and start a new thread with as much information as possible for each TV you are working on. And remember a dis ability can be an excuse to fail, or motivation to succeed. The choice is yours.

Good luck,
Jim

Well, I am 100% more than willing to learn for sure

I want to learn the theory of operation, difinetely but, where can I find this?

I have so far, only, been downloading the Service Manuals and, looking for where there is supposed to be voltages and where not and, trying to figure it out.

Please don't think I am only trying to look for help to fix something. I actually bought 8 Plasma Televisions and 4 LCD televisions that are ALL NOT working and, spent almost all the money I had saved, to learn how to actually fix these things and, show my family (Brothers and Parents) that I can do it.

They laugh and, think that I am only cluttering the basement with junk. I try to tell them that I WILL learn no matter what and how much time it takes me. They tell me that the televisions will be extinct by the time I fix them and, I just do not think that fixing them can't be that hard because I see some other people fixing them and, I don't think they are more smart than me

Well, all I can do is try and, with any help I can do it

Please don't think I am stupid or something. I am not! I love electronics and, can learn easy. I ONLY need some help to get started and, IF anyone is willing to lend me a hand I will be happy to pay or whatever is needed

I have to find something good to do so, they stop bothering me calling me crazy and stupid. I am not

Please, anyone, let me know where I should start please

also, IF I am a pain, then please let me know and, I will just give up and find something different to do

And, I apologise IF I am being a pain but, It seems like Nobody wants to help me learn and it is getting a lot depressing for me

Thank you again

Google is your friend in this case.

plasma tv theory of operation Do a search for that term, you will find many sites that explain the operation and how they function. Sometimes service manuals can help, but they are not really geared towards teaching a person how to troubleshoot them. And after reading some of the later service manuals, I don't think they have any clue how the sets work.

Service manuals will tell you trouble codes, service menus, alignment procedures, and sometimes waveform data.

Also look up as much information on Switch mode power supplies, these are used in most modern electronics, and are the cause of 60 to 75% of all failures. If you learn to properly troubleshoot and repair power supplies, you will have a leg up on 80% of the "techs" working in the industry now.

Jim

BTW, lets move this to a new thread, we are hijacking a thread about a specific Toshiba problem.

Where should we move it to?

Can you send me a link? I am not all that good with computers yet

I can see that I am being a pain in the butt. So, I apologize and, I wont bother you all with my stupidity
and, I will not bother you anymore

Maybe I will just give these stupid things away and, try something a bit easier to fix

Sorry again

Thank you for all the help you all have given me, it has helped me a great deal

There, I started another thread in a more appropriate area for general questions.

For questions specific to a certain model, this is the place to post those questions.

Your questions are often things that other people also question, but won't ask.:T

Jim
Since I am having EXACTLY the same problem (I could use the video in the first post as mine!) I thought it would be ok to tag onto this thread. Unit is an approx 5 yr old Toshiba 42HP66. Yesterday there was an audible 'pop' then the screen dimmed maybe 50% or more. Because of information I have gathered elsewhere I removed the back panel and first checked for any obvious visual damage or inconsistencies in any of the boards or components. Nothing there. I then checked all of the visible fuses and found that the top fuse in the two fuse block in the lower LH corner of the zsus board had no continuity. Because of the symptoms and the popped fuse I suspect a problem with the zsus board. Obviously due to the price of new sets similar or better in performance to this one, I do not want to spend a lot of money trying to fix this one. I have found a couple of places on the net where I can get a new board for around $100. My question is does anyone have a feel or experience for what, if any, other damage there might be in this sort of situation. Also, before this event I did notice that when the screen was black I was getting some little red speckles, snow I guess, in some areas of the screen and was wondering if this could possibly be related to the failure of the zsus board. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Check under the buffers. They often blow out the bottom.

Jim
Ok, I will show my lack of knowledge but what are the buffers?
The thin boards on the left side with the back off.
When the IC s blow, they often vent out the bottom of the chip and will leave an obvious burn through the bottom.

Jim
Thank you! I'll take a look at that this evening.
