I've used REQ many times for home theater, stereo, even pro audio work. This time, what I'd like to do is test the frequency response of a piece of hardware directly. Specifically, a musical instrument tube pre-amp. I'm guessing this is pretty easy, and I can just insert it in the chain where the mic would normally be. Then I feed REQ's sine through the preamp's input and measure accordingly.
Has anyone done this, I really wasn't sure what to search for, this forum is vast. Any ideas tips or tricks? I think this is probably as easy as it sounds, but maybe not...

It’s pretty easy. Just run the loopback calibration routine, with the tube pre inserted in the signal chain.

Oh, and make sure all tone controls are set to flat, because their settings will show up in the graph you generate.

Yes - and that's what I'm stoked to look at, unlike sound reproduction, instrument preamps are meant to 'sound' like something and add timbral effect. I'll be able to generate EQ curves based on different control positions and see what different distortion levels and gain structures look like. If it works like I think I will, REW is a perfect tool for visualizing what the piece will do.

Check out the YDP2006 review in my signature. Most of the graphs presented were generated in REW using the loopback insertion technique.
