Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

I will soon open a new thread about the upcoming measurement session. Though not every requested sub will be there, many interesting ones will. :whistling: And of course we still have around month to go so anything can still happen...

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

I should have a lot more info regarding this tomorrow... ;)
Well? Today is yesterday's tomorrow... :paddle:

 Sorry, I'm just (very) curious, because I've made one or two TC-2000 thingies myself...

Almost done, not quite yet though. Hopefully tomorrow is the day.

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

Okay, a little sneak peak to something that has been cooking for some time now. ;) Not completely OT since this sub will be participating in my next measurement session.

Pic of the other end. Guess what the other end has??

In-room frequency response with mains. Some EQ in the upper bass range, but no L/T or similar. 11-13 Hz dip is room induced.

Just a quick SPL/THD test at 15 Hz (mic at LP). Nowhere near max output as one can see from the THD figure.

Lots of more to come in the near future. :heehee:

AWWWWWWW-SUMMMMM!

Your room and that 16Hz mode looks almost perfect with the sub's roll off. (You cheated picking 15Hz for the THD graph)

When did you get the Sound Tech software?

Did you experiment with placement, or just stick it where you always have the sub?

What kind of wood? Looks like maple or alder. Looks excellent!

Is it passive?

What power plant?

How many cubes?

What material for the tube? Is it painted or other?

Stuffing?

Everyone knows that engineer geeks can't build stuff, so who helped you with the baffles?:R

Looking forward to all the info.

Interesting that the room doesn't create a lot of distortion at 15hz - I thought non close mic in room THD measurements down low were useless because the room itself will resonate and such. Guess not. Looking forward to the full gamut :T

Whooah, a lot of questions considering how much info you have given from your own sub(s). ;)

I will promise to open a new thread, but here are some basics before that.

2 TC-2000 15", opposed firing
5 cu ft / 140 L net
508mm ID, 12mm / 1/2" thick sonotube, lined with 1 1/2" eggcrate foam, covered in black felt
30mm end caps made out of heat-treated birch with a CNC machine
two 18mm inner end caps per end made out of HDF
total weight around 55kg / 120lbs
2.4 kW pro amp (drivers in series, amp bridged)
Behringer DCX2496

It is a problem IF the room resonates. Mine doesn't have problems at those levels.

Heh-heh, point taken. It's good to see that you'll have a decent representation of a dual opposing driver sealed sub for objective data.

I was wondering if you would take a measurement of the sub with the graph expanded to 2Hz, with the DEQ in the chain and without it, to see the effect, if any on the sub's extension, in-room?

When you take the sub outdoors, will you measure at different tunes (by EQ), or just as a passive sub? You should be close enough to a natural .71 Q to be able to apply a shelf boost at 2 additional points to note the power compression price for extension's sake, no?

Thanks for the sneak peek! Looking forward to the thread and further ahead to the GP session results.

5 cubes is a pretty big sub for a sealed unit. How does it compare in overall size to your SVSub?

It's not the DEQ, it's the DCX. It's pretty easy and much more reliable to measure the DCX itself. Here's the frequency response: it's for example 3 dB down at 5 Hz. IMO that's pretty good compared to say Velodyne SMS-1 which is ~29 dB down at 5 Hz, and to Onix R-DES which is ~8 dB down at 5 Hz.

Not decided yet, but I have though about measuring at least two different EQ settings: one close to natural, and another with ~12 dB L/T.

5 cubes may be big to someone, but when you're used to the SVS Plus/2, it looks really small. OD for the tube is 532mm, distance from end cap to end cap is 810mm.

My main speakers are 1 meter tall.

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

There will most probably be at least one large and low tuned subwoofer (probably TC-2000 15") in my next measurement session in early May. Also other "heavy duty" DIY subs will be there. Just wait.
Excellent news.. I can't wait to see how the DIY comunity stacks up with the pro's.

And you sub is gorgeous.. both in appearance and function! :hail:

Very nice Ilkka!..way to go. Put a feather in your cap for doing such a nice job on your caps! I like everything about it from the looks of it, including your graph... a much more refined look than other options you could have went with. Those built in feet don't look nun to bad either.

Very nice sub Ilkka, I've actually had thoughts about doing something similar with the extra tube I have for the new media-room. Looking forward to all the tests outside!

Very fine craftsmanship! It looks great with your mains and measure incredibly well next to my sealed TC-3k ;) I am very interested in your comparison.

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

How about Elemental Designs subwoofers??

Any of the A2, A3, A5, A7 series subwoofers.

They are primarily a car audio subwoofer company but have ventured into HT lately. They seem to have good quality components and the enclosures are built rigidly. They seem to be a bargain and have free shipping on the bigger units. They might even offer to lend one to test!
The dual 12" and dual 15" units look really interesting!! I hope Illka can find an arrangement with EDesign to have at least one of those tested:T

I have sent them several e-mails but I haven't got any replies. I guess they are not interested...

Maybe it would help if some people would e-mail them that they would like to see EDesign's subwoofers being tested?

Ilkka,
IMHO they have a less than desirable email/tech support system. I've always had difficulties getting replies through emails. In my experience they seem to answer the phone and it all most never fails. A girl named Le will answer and than ask to speak to Ben.

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

I just got a reply from EDesign.

"Currently we do not have enough inventory to offer you one for testing."

So no ED subs for this round of testing.
